Get involved

There is more than one way to put a child in a classroom

Money is the fastest route, but it is not the only one. Time, reach, expertise and introductions all convert into school places in the end.

Ways to get involved

Corporate partnership

One partner can fund an entire edition of Back to School.

We work with organisations that want their giving to be legible, a named programme, a defined cohort, and reporting you can put in front of your own board or publish in your annual review.

Several foundations already fund the work this way. What we offer in return is specificity: you will know how many children, which programme, and what changed.

What would help most

  • Fund a Back to School edition, in full or in part
  • Match your employees' fundraising
  • Sponsor a cohort of children under your organisation's name
  • Contribute skills, logistics, print, legal, accountancy

Fundraise

Ten thousand Francs CFA per child means a modest total goes a long way.

A single fundraiser covering a few hundred pounds funds a classroom's worth of children for a year. That is an unusually clear thing to put on a sponsorship page, and it is why fundraising for TMTF tends to work.

Run something, bake something, climb something, or simply ask your circle at a birthday. We will give you the figures, the photographs and the permission to use them.

What would help most

  • Take on a challenge event
  • Ask for donations instead of birthday presents
  • Run a collection at work, school or church
  • Set a target in children rather than pounds, it lands harder

Volunteer

Small charities run on donated expertise.

Most of what we need is skilled and remote: writing, design, translation between English and French, accountancy, grant research, and help preparing reports. Some of it is hands-on in Cameroon around the events.

We will be straight with you about what we need rather than finding something for you to do. Your time is a donation and wasting it is the same as wasting money.

What would help most

  • Grant research and bid writing
  • French and English translation
  • Accountancy and bookkeeping
  • Photography, film and editing
  • Event support in Buea

Become an ambassador

Speak for the work where we cannot reach.

Ambassadors introduce TMTF to their own communities, workplaces and networks. It is the least formal route and often the most valuable, most of our partners arrived through somebody who already knew us.

What would help most

  • Introduce us to an organisation that funds education
  • Speak about the work at your workplace or place of worship
  • Share campaigns when they run

Events

The Back to School day is the year's fixed point.

Each edition brings hundreds of children and their families together for registration and the handover. Around it sit fundraising dinners and networking evenings in the UK.

Dates are announced as they are confirmed. If you would like to attend, host or sponsor one, say so and we will keep you on the list.

What would help most

  • Attend a fundraising evening
  • Host an event in your own venue
  • Sponsor an event's costs so more of the takings reach the children

Leave a legacy

The largest gift most charities ever receive is one nobody discussed in advance.

A gift in your will costs nothing in your lifetime and can fund a child's entire education several times over. For an organisation of this size it would be transformative rather than incremental.

This is a conversation rather than a form, and it should involve your solicitor. We are happy to provide whatever wording and detail they need.

What would help most

  • Talk to us before you write it, so we can help your solicitor get it right
  • Consider a residuary gift, a share of what is left, rather than a fixed sum, so its value holds over time

Occasional updates, nothing more
